Over the next couple of months I’ll be working on a special project that involves painting many of the classic Universal Monster characters on blank skateboard decks.

Above is my first prototype board, featuring the infamous Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Measuring approximately 8 x 30 inches, it was painted primarily with acrylic, gesso and ink, then topped off with a gloss finish.  An acrylic-based gel was also used to fill in the holes where hardware and wheels would normally be attached.  The flipside of the board was painted a shiny black.

In the future, instead of painting on the underbelly of the board, I’ll be showcasing my work on the top side where traditionally grip tape is attached.  I’ll also be keeping the holes open, which allows the convenient use of nails or other secure hanging devices to be neatly inserted when displayed against a wall.  The holes also provide easy access points for looping string, fishing line or twine around if the skateboard is to be displayed inside a custom-built shadow or plexi-box.

This one of a kind Meeting Neil is Easy Creature from the Black Lagoon skateboard is available here.

Stay tuned for future boards and other ghastly surprises.
